A historic building in active use
A palace, townhouse, monastery, industrial site, artist’s residence or other meaningful structure adapted with care.
Apply for the Label
Artshotels considers places where history is not simply displayed, but carried forward through architecture, objects, people and the experience offered to every guest.
A first indication
The Label is open to independent hotels and distinctive properties within thoughtful groups. Age alone is not enough, and luxury alone is not the measure.
A strong candidate can explain what has been inherited, what has been protected, how the property relates to local culture, and how guests encounter that story without sacrificing comfort or sincerity.
A palace, townhouse, monastery, industrial site, artist’s residence or other meaningful structure adapted with care.
A property may be recent if its architecture, collection, craft or cultural programme forms a credible relationship with place.
Antiques, portraits or period styling do not constitute heritage when they are disconnected from the building, locality or a truthful story.
A two-minute indication
Six questions offer an initial orientation. The result is not an assessment or admission decision; it simply helps you decide whether an application is worth preparing.
The Artshotels standard
There is no single architectural style and no fixed age threshold. The strength lies in coherence: what the place is, what it preserves and how it welcomes.
The building, site or institution carries a history that can be documented and meaningfully shared.
Art, architecture, craft, archives, collections or local traditions are present as more than decoration.
The hotel belongs to its city or landscape and helps guests understand where they have arrived.
Comfort, service and human care give the story a contemporary and generous form.
Historical claims are specific, proportionate and supported by credible material wherever possible.
The people responsible for the hotel intend to preserve, interpret and continue what makes it distinctive.
The application dossier
A complete dossier allows us to understand the place before asking for further time from your team.
Identity and ownership — hotel name, location, opening date, room count, ownership and operating structure.
History of the place — principal dates, former uses, people and events connected to the building or site.
Architecture and interiors — restoration approach, significant spaces, materials, objects and design decisions.
Art and cultural life — collections, commissions, archives, craft, programming and local cultural relationships.
Guest experience — the welcome, service philosophy and ways the story becomes perceptible during a stay.
Supporting material — current photography, press kit, heritage records and relevant public or institutional sources.
How admission works
Each stage is designed to protect the meaning of the Label and avoid asking a hotel for extensive material before an initial fit has been established.
Share the essential facts, the property’s history and the reason you believe it belongs within Artshotels.
We consider fit across heritage, culture, hospitality, integrity and sense of place.
If there is a potential fit, we request supporting material and speak with a responsible representative.
The property is reviewed in greater depth. Further documentation or an independent visit may be requested.
Approved hotels receive a proposed editorial scope, Label terms and subscription details before any commitment.
If the hotel is accepted
Artshotels is not a pay-to-list directory. Payment never replaces assessment. The relationship begins only when editorial fit has been established and both parties agree on how the hotel will be represented.

A working relationship
Attention before attribution.
Every Label relationship begins with evidence, conversation and a shared understanding of how the hotel’s story should be carried forward.

The hotel commits to
Commercial clarity
The application and initial review are free. If approved, the hotel receives a written proposal describing the editorial scope, subscription, duration, review conditions and termination terms. Nothing is activated without acceptance.
Initial application
This first form is intentionally concise. It helps us establish whether a fuller dossier and conversation would be useful.
Have the hotel website, a concise property history and the appropriate decision-maker’s contact details ready.
You will receive an acknowledgement. If the property appears aligned, we will contact you for the next stage; submission itself does not confer selection or Label status.
Questions before applying
No. Formal heritage status can strengthen a dossier, but Artshotels also considers places with well-documented local, architectural, artistic or social significance.
No universal threshold is applied. A property is considered through the coherence of its history, cultural contribution, hospitality and sense of place.
Yes, but each property is assessed individually. A group identity does not automatically qualify every hotel within it.
No. Application, editorial selection and formal Label admission are distinct. Each status is stated clearly wherever a hotel appears.
Only after a hotel has passed the assessment. The written proposal sets out fees, scope and terms before the hotel decides whether to join.
Yes. Recognition depends on the property continuing to meet the agreed standard. Material changes, inaccurate claims or a decline in the assessed experience may trigger review.
